FOOT-and-Mouth disease has been controlled in Mbarara district, according to the
area veterinary officer, Dr. John Lewis Barigye.
"After persisting for eight months, foot and mouth disease is non-existent. But Biharwe, Bwizibwera and Kyenshama cattle markets will remain closed until the disease is completely controlled in the country."
Barigye said there had been no deaths reported as a result of the disease.
He said they vaccinated 50,000 head of cattle in Rubaya, Biharwe, Rwanyamahembe, Kakiika, Nyakayojo, Rugando and Bubaare sub-counties.
Speaking to The New Vision last week, Barigye said cattle traders with permits were allowed to buy animals from farms and transport them to slaughter houses. Check points to control cattle movement were set up.
Barigye appealed to the farmers who wish to vaccinate their animals against the disease to contact the veterinary officers, adding that the exercise was free.
