The use of aggressive methods of treating AIDS by using drugs like AZT and
protease inhibitors cannot reverse the AIDS syndrome because they promote the
same conditions that led to the problem. They depress the immune system and
damage body enzymes, which are responsible for the generation of life itself.
These chemicals used as magic bullets against a hypothetical causative agent
(believed by some to be a retro-virus) are responsible for damage to the
individual that is greater than the disease itself. This could be compared to
killing a mosquito using a shotgun.
The most well known treatment for AIDS and HIV is Retrovir, also known as AZT.
It was the first drug to be approved for the treatment of AIDS and is usually
used with other drugs in a treatment known as triple combination therapy.
Here's how the two remedies square up...

Reverses the symptoms of AIDS by boosting the body's natural immune system. It repairs the damage caused by the HIV virus and lessens multiplication. |
Inhibits the reproduction of HIV by terminating the building of the viral DNA chain. It has been shown to delay disease progression in HIV affected individuals. |
